Introduction

Medicinal plants are indispensable link between health and disease. Diligent knowledge of medicinal plants is essential for health and effective treatment. Dravyaguna consists of studying of medicinal plants which are used for disease prevention and cure.

The Department has commenced PG course from 1990 which is signified by the presence of a herbal garden consisting of different species of plants and herbs that are used to edify scholars as well as general audience about their therapeutic uses. The herbs are also utilized in preparing fresh medicines for in-patient needs of hospital. Museum is also famed part of the department.

The principal objective is to provide standard education and training to undergraduates (BAMS)students as well as postgraduates scholars (M.D.Ayu) which includes classical, rational & contemporary knowledge of therapeutic uses of medicinal plants in different diseased conditions.

Facilities in the Department:

We have two well maintained herbal gardens consisting of  250 species . Many of them are QR coded for plant information to benefit students as well as  general public .
Amongst of them ,some important species are :-

  1. Raktachandan (Pterocarpus santalinus.Linn)
  2. Sarpagandha (Rauwolfia serpentina.Kurz)
  3. Ashok (Saraca asoca.Willd)
  4. Agaru (Aquilaria agallocha Roxb.)
  5. Ankol (Alangium salviifolium.Linn.)
  6. Chandan (Santalum album.Linn)
  7. Hijjal (Barringtonia acutangular.Gaertn)
Department initiative
  1. Plantation drive of new medicinal plants of different species are carried out in yearly basis.
  2. Local and Out of state educational tours for field exploration are conducted on yearly basis.
  3. Department encourages research aspect in students by guiding them for oral paper presentation and publications in peer reviewed international journals.

Museum
Departmental Museum have preserved wet specimens as well as dry samples for study purpose.

Laboratory
As per the NCISM norms, a Pharmacognosy Lab is well equipped with necessary required instruments and equipments  which are required for the detailed understanding of knowledge .

Library
Departmental library is accomplished with reference books of Ayurveda & pharmacology.

Audio-visual facility
Department is equipped with AV facilty and WIFI facility for study purpose .

Charts
Flex charts of herbal drugs & modern pharmacology concepts are available.

Field Visit
epartment organizes local & out of state study tours every year for medicinal plant exploration.
